The Trump administration has issued a proclamation imposing a 25% tariff on medium and heavy-duty trucks and truck parts, effective November 1, 2025. The measure, announced last Friday evening, applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 5 tons (10,000 pounds), covering all Class 3 trucks and above, as well as parts for these vehicles.
The tariffs are enacted under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, the same authority previously used for steel, aluminum, and auto tariffs. They are separate from the "Liberation Day" tariffs currently under court challenge. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on those IEEPA tariffs on November 5.
